The Sustainability of Nova Scotia's Harbours and Wharves: Towards a Coordinated Action Strategy

March 2005 Regional Meetings

Dear Colleague,

RE: March 2005 REGIONAL MEETINGS: Follow-up to the January 20th meeting in Eastern Passage

On January 20th , 2005, 18 people braved one of January's heavy snowstorms to attend a planning session on the sustainability of Nova Scotia's Harbours and Wharves. Though meeting attendance, and representation from community stakeholders, was predictably low, the discussion was excellent, touching upon many of the issues that face coastal communities today. A summary of the discussions, along with recent media coverage on the issues, is available on this website.

One of the priorities identified in the discussions - providing more opportunities for networking and cooperation - has led to the set up of four regional meetings to take place in March. The four meetings will present a valuable opportunity for information sharing and learning from each other, for communicating results of the report, “Between the Land and Sea”, and for developing direction for policy change. Stakeholders invited to attend include: Harbour Authorities, non-profit preservation societies, regional development agencies, community development groups, tourism operators, coastal-based businesses, fishing industry, and representatives of provincial and federal government departments.

Ideas generated from the four regional meetings will contribute to an overall strategy for coordinated development and action.
