Health Policy Internship
A new Health Policy Internship, sponsored by the Policy Research Initiative (Ottawa), the Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre (Halifax) and the Rural Communities Impacting Policy (RCIP) Project (Nova Scotia), has been developed for the summer of 2005.
In July and August of 2005, Lisa Jensen, a graduate student in Community Health and Epidemiology at Dalhousie University, will be located as an intern at the Policy Research Initiative (PRI) in Ottawa. The PRI conducts and synthesizes research in support of the Government of Canada's medium term agenda. Its core mandate is to advance research on emerging horizontal issues, and to ensure the effective transfer of acquired knowledge to policy-makers. The PRI currently has five horizontal research projects:
Population Aging and Life-course Flexibility
New Approaches for Addressing Poverty and Exclusion
Social Capital as a Public Policy Tool
North American Linkages
Sustainable Development (Freshwater Management)
In 2005, the internship will be integrated with the Population Aging and Life-course Flexibility section; more specifically focusing on work-life balance. The intern will produce two pieces of work during the eight-week internship.
Firstly, a synthesis document on key dimensions of international and national policies related to work/life balance will be conducted. This work will be useful to the core work of both the Policy Research Initiative and the Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre.
The second document will explore family work life balance issues for rural communities in Canada. This document will be published in the fall edition of Horizons, the Policy Research Initiative's knowledge dissemination document. The internship also offers the opportunity for Lisa to further her understanding between life-course health, research and the policy development process in the upper levels of government.
