Winter 2005

At the February 2005 RCIP Rural Policy Forum, participants and staff from the Food Security Projects of the Nova Scotia Nutrition Council (NSNC), Atlantic Health Promotion Research Centre (AHPRC), and Nova Scotia Family Resource Centres/Projects came together to focus on what is happening about food security within Nova Scotian communities.

Specifically, in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, community champions associated with Kid’s First Family Resource Centre were actively involved in this work and were at the stage where they were eager to take action on the issue through policy. The Rural Policy Forum workshop used Thought About Food? A Workbook on Food Security and Policy to assist interested members of this group to define the issues of focus relevant to their communities and work towards a policy action plan. See the 2005 Rural Policy Forum Report for more details.

In a recent report entitled Agriculture and the Community in the Next Decade – Developing a Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture in Nova Scotia, six major issues were identified as being “…critical to the continued development and growth of profitable farm businesses in Nova Scotia”: Environment, Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Marketing, Youth and Agriculture, Land Use Planning and Farm Income. The report also “…suggests a number of action strategies intended to enable the continued development of financially viable, ecologically sound and socially responsible farm businesses.”According to Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, these are the key issues and strategies that the agricultural industry and Nova Scotia taxpayers must address if they wish to maintain vibrant rural communities.
